Heat pump services.
Cold-climate heat pumps heat and cool efficiently and keep working through Minnesota winters. We handle installation, repair, and tune-ups.
Modern cold-climate heat pumps operate efficiently at -13°F or below.
That makes them viable as a primary heating source even here. North Star installs and services cold-climate heat pumps as full-home heating systems, as supplements to existing gas furnaces (dual-fuel), and as ductless mini-splits. We work with Mitsubishi, Bosch, and Carrier Infinity cold-climate equipment.
- Cold-climate heat pump installation (Mitsubishi, Bosch, Carrier)
- Dual-fuel system setup (heat pump + gas furnace backup)
- Ductless mini-split heat pumps for zoned comfort
- Heat pump repair and full diagnostics
- Refrigerant service and leak detection
- Defrost cycle issues and outdoor unit service
- Supplemental heat integration and controls
- Federal tax credit (30%) documentation
- Xcel Energy cold-climate heat pump rebate assistance
- Existing heat pump tune-up and maintenance
Heat pumps got good enough for Minnesota.
Five years ago, we didn't recommend them as a primary system north of Iowa. The newest cold-climate equipment, Mitsubishi Hyper Heat, Carrier Infinity, Bosch IDS, holds rated capacity down to around -13°F. That covers most of a Minnesota heating season.
For the few coldest days, a dual-fuel setup lets your existing gas furnace take over automatically. You get efficient electric heating 90%+ of the season and gas backup for the days that need it.
From the consultation to a commissioned, rebate-filed system.

System design and equipment selection
Options with efficiency data and estimated operating costs. Full-system or dual-fuel, ducted or ductless.
Installation
Outdoor and indoor units mounted, refrigerant lines run, electrical connected, integrated with your existing controls.
Commissioning in both modes
Heating and cooling tested, defrost cycle verified, dual-fuel switchover setpoint tuned to your home.
Rebate and tax credit filing
Federal 25C credit (up to 30%, up to $2,000) plus Xcel Energy rebates documented. Paperwork handed off with the invoice.
What the money looks like.
Is a heat pump right for your Minnesota home?
The honest answer depends on your house. Here are the factors we weigh with you during the consultation.
Cold-climate models maintain capacity to -13°F; backup gas handles the coldest days.
Dual-fuel pairs a heat pump with your existing gas furnace.
Well-insulated, air-sealed homes get the most efficiency from heat pumps.
Heat pumps move heat rather than generate it, 2–3× more efficient than electric resistance.
Federal 25C tax credit covers 30% of equipment and installation costs, up to $2,000/year.
Xcel Energy offers rebates of $200–$600 depending on equipment.
We can model your estimated annual energy cost vs. your current system.
If your old AC and furnace are both near end of life, now is the natural moment.
Heat pump FAQ.
Honest answers about heat pumps in a Minnesota winter.
Do heat pumps really work at -20°F?
Modern cold-climate models from Mitsubishi, Bosch and Carrier hold rated capacity to about -13°F. For the coldest days, a dual-fuel setup lets your gas furnace take over automatically.
What is a dual-fuel system?
A heat pump paired with your existing gas furnace. The heat pump handles most of the season efficiently, and the furnace switches on below a setpoint we tune to your home.
What incentives are available?
The federal 25C credit covers 30% of costs, up to $2,000 per year, and Xcel Energy rebates currently range from $200 to $600. We document both and hand the paperwork over with your invoice.
Heat pump or mini-split?
Ducted heat pumps use your existing ductwork. Ductless mini-splits suit homes without ducts, additions or zoned comfort. We recommend based on your house after an assessment.
Do you repair heat pumps you did not install?
Yes. We diagnose and repair heat pumps, including defrost cycle problems, refrigerant leaks and outdoor unit service.
Is a heat pump right for my home?
It depends on insulation, ductwork and your current system. We model your estimated annual energy cost against your current equipment so you can see the difference.
Curious whether a heat pump makes sense for your house?
Book a consultation. We'll run the numbers on your actual home, insulation, equipment age, utility rates, and tell you honestly whether a heat pump, dual-fuel, or sticking with gas is the right call.
